The West Sussex Goodwood Estate contains Goodwood House, the current residence of the 10th Duke of Richmond, and Molecomb House resided in by the Earl of March, but in the middle of the 19th century it was the 7th Duke of Richmond and Lord March who occupied the respective houses. Although Goodwood is the better known racecourse, on Friday 12th March 1847 the Molecomb Hill races were staged on a course just above Lord March’s house on Goodwood Park. The meeting was arranged under the superintendence of John Kent and featured the Molecomb Cup over 1 ½ miles restricted to horses hunted with Colonel Wyndham’s hounds or the Findon hounds. The race was won by Lord A G Lennox’s The Sedge. Later in the day the Molecomb Sweepstake, also over 1 ½ miles, went to Barnaby Rudge owned by Lord A G Lennox, beating Fidditch and Jenny Lund, while the Scurry Stakes went to Bertha for Mr J Wyatt.
